Fighting for the Soul of Public Education
A conversation with:
Barbara Miner
author of Lessons from the Heartland and former managing editor of Rethinking Schools magazine
Friday, May 10
4 pm social, 4:30 program (talk, discussion, and book signing)
Westminster Presbyterian Church
Fireside Room, 1624 NE Hancock (2 blocks north of Broadway)
Barbara Miner, the former managing editor of Rethinking Schools, weaves together the tumultuous struggles around public education with broader issues of jobs, housing, and race. Writing in the Progressive magazine, editor Matthew Rothschild calls Miner's book "a magnificent work."
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an iconic city in America's heartland, is ground zero in the "school choice" voucher movement. It is a nationwide symbol of the abandonment of public education, and Miner's Portland appearance is part of a national tour to "connect the dots, city by city" of school privatization.
How have parents, teachers and community activists across the country been resisting the corporate agenda?
What can Milwaukee and Portland learn from each other?
Join us!
Sponsored by Portland Area Rethinking Schools, Social Equality Educators, Oregon Save Our Schools, Oregon Writing Project at Lewis and Clark College, and Rethinking Schools magazine
